Xiaomi is reportedly developing its own mobile processor, aiming to reduce its dependence on major chip suppliers like Qualcomm and MediaTek. Mass production of this in-house designed chip is expected to commence in 2025.
This strategic move aligns with China’s broader initiative to enhance technological self-reliance amid global tech rivalries. By creating its own processors, Xiaomi seeks to distinguish itself in the competitive Android market, which is predominantly influenced by Qualcomm-powered devices.
Beyond smartphones, Xiaomi’s venture into chip development is anticipated to bolster its endeavors in the electric vehicle (EV) sector. The company introduced its first electric vehicle, the Xiaomi SU7, earlier this year. Developing proprietary chipmaking capabilities could lead to more advanced and interconnected EVs, integrating seamlessly with Xiaomi’s ecosystem.
Xiaomi’s Chairman and CEO, Lei Jun, announced plans to invest approximately 30 billion yuan ($4.1 billion) in research and development in 2025, up from 24 billion yuan this year. This investment will focus on key technologies, including artificial intelligence, operating system enhancements, and semiconductor development.
While Xiaomi has previously ventured into chip design with the Surge S1 processor in 2017, it faced challenges in gaining significant market traction. The current initiative reflects a more ambitious effort, leveraging advancements in technology and increased investment to achieve greater success in the semiconductor arena.
However, entering the smartphone chip market presents substantial challenges. Companies like Intel and Nvidia have struggled to compete effectively, and even industry leaders such as Samsung rely heavily on Qualcomm’s chips due to their superior efficiency and mobile connectivity. Only a few tech giants, including Apple and Google’s Alphabet, have successfully transitioned their devices to self-designed silicon.
Xiaomi’s commitment to developing its own mobile processor signifies a significant step toward technological independence and innovation. The outcomes of this endeavor will be closely observed as the company navigates the complexities of semiconductor development and integration into its product lineup.
